Something actually useful to steve:

The 1.6 flywheels and clutches are smaller and lighter. And are sometimes actually prefered if you can find a pressure plate/clutch combo that matches your power. I didn't know this and went straight to a 1.8 clutch.

Damn. I can't wait to do my brakes this weekend so I can have something on here to be talked about besides men's fashion.

Maybe I'll do some lighting work, too. Hmm

Good info. Will keep in mind if I ever get to power/torque levels that would make that applicable for my setup

To add to that, about 300lbft (there are some 6 pucks rated at just over 405tq) seems to be the upper limit of 1.6 clutches (sans the excotic multi discs, etc.). So if you dont plan on ever exceeding that, you can find a lighter FW than if you went 1.8. (again not including the muilti discs).

300 wtq is well into rods and 6 spd territory.

<3 light flywheel, hardly any downside.

I wouldn't mess with a 1.6 FW if you ever plan to build a block as Sean mentions, point of diminishing returns.

Dang. This one is starting to move faster than Aidan's.

Nobody ever posts in my build threads. I'm not feeling the love. Is it because I'm old and ugly?

Serious question though, I know there were a lot of detail differences between MSM parts and regular '04-'05 Miata parts, but I thought the flywheel was the same. ??

The MSM flywheel was designed and engineered for a forced induction application so yes, it is stronger and more integral than a "normal" 1.8 motor's flywheel.

The 1.8 fw is supposed to be 18-19 pounds and the MSM fw is supposed to be 17-18 pounds. So there is also a chance that it is lighter. I couldn't get a straight answer from Mazda.

Nothing on the msm was designed for boost. They just threw random parts together and a turbo.

I meant that it has more integrity to it.. Like it's stronger. I think I was trying to make up words over here...

That'd what Mazda told me when I called, anyway

Whether it is or isnt (i have exactly 0 first hand knowledge or experience with anything MSM) doesn't matter as flywheels arnt known to fail with power. Even stock 1.6 casting can hold up to stupid power. So dont let it be a deciding factor for you.

I was hoping for something like, "there is more clutch integrated into the MSM clutch". lol
