There are basically two Canon DSLR line up options- full size sensor and smaller APS-C sensor. The smaller sensor is found on the less expensive cameras and uses the EF-S senses which cannot be used on the full size sensor cameras. That said, if you started with a T2i you could upgrade to a 7D later because they're both APS-C/EF-S.
The benefits of the 7D over the T2i are clear. But at double the cost of complete T2i kit, you have a superior body and no lens. It really comes down to what you want to spend to get into a DSLR and how much of that you want to spend elsewhere.

<p>Just keep in mind when you keep talking about keeping everything and swapping the body: You're looking at a $45 lens that will come with the T2i. So if you're serious about it becoming something you'd like to invest some money in in the long term, I would consider buying a nicer lens to start with and then whatever body you want for the time being. </p>

<p>I'm buying used. So shouldn't the depreciation already have fucked someone over?</p><p>I guess this is where I'm at. I'm looking for a starter. For all I know a T2i is perfect for me and I never want anything more. Very high chance of that happening. If I start to like this **** more, maybe I can get a better lense, maybe some other stuff. Maybe upgrade to a 7D. But right now I want <strong><u>CHEAP</u></strong> (while still not sucking).</p><p> </p>

Agreed- I think it's high on value, still offering good performance and features, while already taken it's big depreciation hit. Two years from now you can buy a 7D for the same or less.
I won't knock that 18-55 kit lens. It's one of the best EF-S kit lenses Canon has made and ranks near the 50 f/1.8 in value for performance. This is coming from someone who has owned and used spread of L lenses on DSLRs since his first Canon D30.

<p>I spent 2 weeks with my dad's camera, and I do pretty well about remembering to put the lense cap on and everything. We'll see how long it lasts </p>

<p>My old roommate would take his 6D with a $2k lens out on the lake where we proceed to drink 14 beers and wakeboard. Just buy Insurance and enjoy having a camera. lol</p><p>Also, the 7D is 6 years old now :P</p><p>EDIT: And a wrist strap. My insurance covers water damage, not "it's at the bottom of the lake, damage"</p>

My only renters insurance story.
Buy phone off swappa for $250
Phone got *lost*. (I think it got stolen, but I was too drunk at the time to actually be a reliable witness)
Claimed that my phone was lost.
Got paid full retail for said used phone ($650)
Buy another of the same phone for $200 because depreciation
Profit with $450
