I don't think rust = toast, i've even seen people polish them, but the rust is REALLY weird IMO. That's an area that not only should see oil regularly, but also see contact w/ the bucket regularly. sometimes ther'es rust on the sides, but that one looks like it's got junk on the whole tip (I know, I know, lol)

Ugh. I hate to ask, but have you pulled the cams to look at those journal surfaces yet?
--Ian All that rust was just surface rust, a little wd-40 and it wiped right off. I think my camera just made it look a lot worse than it was in reality. Attachment 237580 Head bearings https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442347143 Can't get a fingernail on any of the bearing surfaces so I think, again, my camera is over defining the lines. it's fine. use it

The location of that rust is really weird. If it wiped right off I wouldn't sweat it, though.
Also, I would expect wear between the aluminum oil pump housing and the hardened steel gear. All that pitting on the gears, though looks like the oil pump ate a LOT of trash. Have you split open any oil filters? |
Most shocking post in the last ~30 posts? The fact that Travis @ Boundary had never seen this thread...

I haven't seen him around much. Found old posts from him in my searching but nothing lately

Well Jeff, when you get it back together, you'll really know what you have. You're right. Glass was definitely half-full on this one.
The adult in me would recommend turning the boost down a bit and enjoying the car. AND GET TO THE TRACK, (dang it!). |
Funny you said that about being an adult about turning the boost down. I'm changed the EBC settings to 10 psi(EWG spring pressure) and calling it a day at that.
For a tiny bit less enjoyment, everything will last much much longer. Honestly, and I speak personally on this. I don't find 350 HP fun. It isn't terrifying or anything, it just is too much and overwhelms your connection to the car. But that could be simple inexperience talking. |

yup definitely going to need a new relief valve. Pretty gnarly scores down the relief valve hole and a definite a hot spot.

sadface :( |
Happy face . . . because you needed it and it didn't destroy your engine like it could have!

Went a little nuts cleaning up the block to paint it. Used a burr grinder bit to pull a lot of the casting irregularities. Not all of them, I'm not that insane, but after spending 9 hours getting the bulk of it off, I decided to throw in the towel and paint.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442644844 Filled all the bolt holes with tape so I don't have to chase the threads...again. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442644844 |
Dude, I wish I had 9 hours to work on my car...period.
|
Sorry I never got back to you, but your bearings are on their way.
