Photobucket went full retard, regardless, there ain't a flaw I can see.
|
Just what the hell color is that car?
Can you find out for me when you go and pick it up? I'm talking paint code, name, the whole 9 yards. |
Ron Burgandy color? Not sure, I'll ask and take pictures of the paint code in the door sill
|
...was he selling the whole car for $5800 with the hardtop? Seems like a really good deal!
|

|
Yeah like $4800 without the hard top.
|
That color is so weird..... i like it.
To satisfy my own curiousity, let us know what sort of shape the car is in when you pick up the top. |
Id rock that color on a black miata. But yeah its weird.
|
That color is approximately the same as my dad's 1964 Avanti.
|
It's in Vegas, so there's some sun fading. But it does look like a sweet, unmolested NB.
|
"this car is for my daily uses."
:squint: Looks like a nice car. Anyway, I'll end the threadjack. Glad you found a good HT. Removed the link til Jeff has his hardtop in hand. |

It almost fit in the wagon! Damn! 3 straps a ton of rags, duck tape to keep the rags from flapping around. Let's do this!

That looks sketchy! Hahaha good luck hope it makes the trip safe and sound!

It's even a little sad, that you will have to paint this nice hardtop... Nice find!

Currently going OCD on organizing the wire harness and connections for you Zaphod. Hopefully I can make it as clear as possible. |

Point of advice having painted two hardtops with drastically different results:
Remove literally everything you can unbolt (obviously) but I would also suggest taking off the trim around the window and the trim on the bottom/edge of the top. the black plastic stuff. my '00 I masked that stuff off, and it turned out mediocre at best, and I'm sure it will peel. my '01 I did what I'm saying and it came out flawless. had a window place install a new window trim, charged me 40 bux. win win I'm sure you were gonna do that anyways, but that's my .02 |

Normally, I'd agree. But it's going on one of the nicest Miatas in existence, so . . . .

I'm going to see if the shop that painted my car will cut me a deal on painting the hard top since I gave them 4 figures to paint my car. They should...hopefully. :crx: Going to start assembly of the rear subframe now. |
Yep, red locktite, but if you don't fat finger it Fae style they should come out fine. Use properly sized screwdriver.
Also I didn't remove window. Just the rubber seal. The window place had a bunch of it in stock brand new so that was cool. Its all nice and new now |

weirdly mine came right out without damaging anything or having to do any cutting or anything. I was very very careful with it, took forever. it just slowly slid out, even from behind the window edge.
the window was completely intact and completely installed and even the silicone was still there sealing it. then they "popped" the new on in after cleaning out a nice amount of the old stuff, with more silicone as lube and to seal put in. I dunno, be careful with it. Mine was surprisingly easy and its flawless right now. Like from the factory. Be careful though |
I think the best way to go about this is to take your car back apart and have it painted to match your new top.

Ok got the dashboard mostly wrapped up, need a couple bits and bobs to install but after I put the wiring harness on it I should be good to go.
Took a lot of cleaning and vinyl conditioner to restore the black back to the vinyl. I don't like a shiny dash so once there is a little more moisture in I'll do a matte finish. Front dash parts were from the spare dashboard, since the one I'm using had tears and dents in it. Also had to clean a lot of muck out of the air vents. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391067142 Put some vinyl foam tape on all the HVAC joints. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391067142 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391067142 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391067142 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391067142 |

Jeff, I'm curious. If this car hadn't been flipped, what would you have done? I mean... Dave built a great car but not even remotely close to what you're building here. Would you have just been driving and enjoying it?

Nope. Hell no. It has been fun and I don't regret considering I know how my car works now and if there is a problem I can tear the car apart in a day to fix it. In a way, it has been a unfortunate blessing in disguise. My practical knowledge of cars and how to work on them has increased 10 fold. As I've said in the past before this I'd never done more than a simple coilover install on my Volkswagen. Hadn't don't much more wrenching other than basic maintenance and detailing. If the car wouldn't have been crashed I for sure would had cleaned the hell out of it and detailed it but that would have been the extent of my tooling. The reason I bought Dave's car I'm the first place was because it was a perfect turn key 300 HP Miata with everything I would have done already installed. Granted his car was more, "because race car" quality. Tons of rattles and noise and was almost unbearable to drive with out noise cancelling headphones. 2 hours into driving I back from Alabama I pulled into a Best buy and bought a pair since I think I'd having hearing loss right now if not for that. The car now will be a LOT more civilized in terms of comfort and refinement but the base of it is still the excellent job Dave did with the huge huge list of parts he put into it. I just wish I was able to get more seat time in it before I had to do this. It is funny though. My attention to detail was pretty high before this build but I'm not sure where the injection of "ludicrous" came from in terms of compromising, or the lack thereof. Even I was shaking my head at myself yesterday while putting the dash back together. [/word vomit] |
Your Dad must be proud. Heck, this thread makes me proud. LOL.
|
Thanks for sharing. Part of me wishes I had bought Dave's car. but despite the crash, it's being put to MUCH better use.
Just props. Be prepared to have a higher prop count than post count once you post pics and vids of it completed. |

Looks like the window guy finally came through. About a month a go I had them try to find a clear windshield without the tint on it and they couldn't find one.
I don't remember giving him my address but my dad called and said they installed it today. Kudos! https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391135496 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391135496 |
Have you showed your dad this thread? You should. Your build is so inspiring that I might finally redo my window trim (lol) instead of putting it off indefinitely. So many of us are living vicariously through you.
Given your OCDness, I feel more more than compelled to try your bread and baked goods. |

Given your OCDness, I feel more more than compelled to try your bread and baked goods. The bread is excellent but if you have a Great Harvest Bread Co by you you can experience it. I am not sure if their bakers are as well trained as mine but it could come close. Not to toot my own horn but I am in the top 5 in the entire franchise in bread quality. |

Onward with the dash project.
Revlimiter hazard switch with black anodized faceplate installed https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 Coolant tank installed https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 Started the blower restore, it was pretty damn dirty https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 Blower fan before https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 after, mounted on the blower motor. Used the air compressor to blow all the shisa out of the motor itself and then a microfiber towel on my flathead and cleaned all the metal contact points and leads. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 Foam was all rotted and missing in a lot of spots. Was barely sealing at all. I couldn't find a good foam to replace it with so I bought a 6mm thick yoga mat at Wal-mart for $8. As for the double take you just did on using a yoga mat....it makes a lot of sense. It is weatherproof, highly resistant to germs, doesn't get hard/corrode for a very very long time, and it is easy to work with. It also has an airtight seal, much better than foam could ever do. I also put a thin film of sealant around all the edges to make sure no chance of water getting into the mat was possible. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 HVAC rod assembly taken apart and regreased https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 Metal bracket that is sandwiched between both sides of the plastic housing was quite rusty, so I sanded it all off and painted it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 Housings all cleaned up and reconditioned https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 Friction tape added to the wires to help with rattling https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 New foam tape to seal the "intake" portion of the blower that sits against the body http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...c/IMG_1363.jpg All assembled and installed with the new AC delete replacement pipe https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391175099 On to the heater core. |
Wow... After seeing how dirty that blower motor is, it makes me want to rip mine out and refurbish it. Would it be hard to remove with the dash still in? That one bolt looks like it would be buried behind the dash.
|
How many cans of black spray paint have you used up to this point...
Yoga mat use is ingenious, you never fail to impress. Ugghghhhg |

I was honestly surprised how gnarly the inside was as well. |

Oh man you're going to have one of the few old NA's that doesn't blow a dust storm when you turn on the air. My dads 92 makes me gag when he turns on the ac/heater

"Friction tape added to the wires to help with rattling"
I didn't even know that was a thing. |

Been having a case of the lazies today so not much done other then tearing apart the heater core and cleaning all the old foam off of it, cleaning all the old grease and dirt, and getting it ready for new foam and reassembly.

Every time I think I'm done with the dirty work something else pops up that I didn't do. Can't wait to have all the cleaning and restoration part of this build done. It has been the thing that has slowed me to a halt the past week. I was going to start the subframe reassembly but I ran out of Amsoil Dominator grease so I can't do the bushings till my order ships. Can't believe I went through a whole tube of it already. |

All cut to size and ready to install. Used a dremmel to angle to the edges so that it will close flushly. The yoga matt is just a little too stiff for the edges to compress and seal so you need to cut them down a couple millimeters so that it is a perfect seal.

I am not so smart. Took a lot of trial and error getting the fitment right so that everything opened and closed correctly. Amazing how complicated an HVAC system is. I can't even imagine how much harder more modern cars are. Tracks all cleaned up and fresh grease applied. Stuck a tiny bit of friction tape under the metal arm after shaking it a bit and seeing how bad it would rattle with just me shaking it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391252453 Another rattle spot on the heater core cover https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391252453 More friction tape under the brass pipe brackets. The upper pipe bracket won't tighten enough to secure it properly. 3 layers of tape holds it down nice and snug. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391252453 Clean https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391252453 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391252453 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391252453 New foam on the pipe brackets https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391252453 Boom-shaka-laka https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391252453 Thank GOD that project is over, that may have been the most tedious thing I've done besides the undercoating. |
This build is everything I wish mine was.
