I think your sig should read "reincarnated" or "immaculately concieved." "Reborn" just doesn't do it justice.

Man it is nice have my bolts back!

Dyed my carpets with real dye, pictures really have a hard time showing how nice they look in person. All one uniform blackness now. The lettering on the mats has been filled in with a fabric black pen, but I didn't get an after shot of it so it looks like shit in the photos.

After

Bumper horns on, the gold contrast looks so good

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388842262

Hood brackets installed, luckily the bolt circles from before I painted them remained

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388842262

Doors installed. This was a bitch getting them lined up with the body/actually installing them by myself. Plus I'm not sure that center bolt on the top bracket does anything.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388842262

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388842262

trunk lid installed. Those tension rods are retarded. Seems like there would have been a much easier way to do it. Latch also installed along with center console release cable and lock cylinder for the rear. Again, centering the trunk lid up was a pain in the butt since you had to do front to rear spacing, side to side spacing, and up and down spacing.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388842262

Tail lights also installed

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388842262

Not too hard really, tomorrow I will probably install the hood just to test the fitment and install the aero-catch hood pins since I am tossing the stock, "brick-of-a-hood latch".

BTMiata 01-04-2014 08:40 AM

Omg it's so good to see it coming together! Looking good man!

miata2fast 01-04-2014 08:47 AM

Looks great.

You took an awful big risk installing the doors yourself. Do not even think of installing the hood without a helper. You should consider taping up the edges before installing heavy bulky items.

curly 01-04-2014 08:49 AM

SOOOO much easier to work on the engine with the hood off. I'd probably leave it off myself. In fact I did yesterday when I went for a test drive on the engine I just installed. I'm guessing you're going in from the bottom with the sub frame off though.

The doors were taped up....

Honestly it wasn't too bad. 2 jacks under the front and rear of the door. All edges taped up and the door sills taped up as well. Just slow small movements and it went together just fine. Just a lot of minor adjustments to get them lined up perfect.

I'm only installing the hood to do the aero catch latches then I'm going to remove it. Even though I am indeed dropping the body onto the assembled running platform I don't want to run the risk of scratching/hitting it when doing all the other work.

Tomorrow I'll work on the front subframe assembly.

bahurd 01-04-2014 10:58 AM

Car looks awesome!

Maybe I missed it but did you spray the carpets with the dye (soaked)? I'm assuming they weren't submerged.

Yea I got that part, thanks. What I was wondering was how was it applied? By spray bottle + brush to work it in or were the carpets submerged in liquid.

Thanks

I found RIT in a aerosolized spray bottle at Joanns fabric store. You spray it really really lightly and allow it to dry in between coats and supposedly you don't have to wash the carpets.

Spent most of the day playing with my niece so I haven't had a chance to do much on the car, no regrets though, I'd much rather do the former than the latter.

Got the turbo/downpipe hooked up. Turbo is a Garrett GT2860RS.
TSE Inconel studs
New exhaust turbine housing
Surfaces milled flat
New wastegate
Nord-lock washers for the downpipe bolts

Just need to add the front hubs and the brake assembly now.

After 5 years of living in the desert you tend to get over things getting dirty fast. Key thing is upkeep and maintenance. You'll wash your car out here and it will be covered in a fine layer of silt 6 hours later.

I really need to find a place with a 2 car garage for a decent price.

jacob300zx 01-05-2014 11:31 AM

The master and clutch slaves are so cheap, just throw new ones on. Like under 20 bucks cheap.

I have the receipts ;). It still isn't a lot, though, even if it looks so. Personal labor invested and what not.

Jeff - I have to assume you won't, but just in case your desire for completion overwhelms your aesthetics... Please make sure to paint/powdercoat that valve cover before final installation. :)

That front subframe assembly looks as good, if not better than new.

I feel so inferior and insufficient right now.

Yeah that is on the list, I might just wrinkle coat it like the valve cover for complete matching aesthetics, we'll see.

Thanks! I really never thought I'd go this far, but again I had the mentality of "while the car is in pieces..." and so of course like every other project I do it has gone to 11.

It would be fun to submit it to a couple websites "miata of the month" competitions.

No updates yet. Currently fighting some pretty smashed up threads on the ball joints with a "die" since my tap set doesn't have a wide enough diameter for the 1.25 threads. Slow, curse worthy work.

Last update for the day.

Found this awesome needle grease gun attachment which makes it so you don't need to worry about removing the boot to get new grease in.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388997755

Found out I was being stupid with the ball joints and needed to tension the control arms to the spindle/hub to compress the ball joint enough that it would stop spinning when tightening the castle nuts.

Used a 3" inch C-clamp with a condom on it to prevent paint damage.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388997755

Tension the ball joints just enough so you can get the ball joints torqued down to +/- 25 ft lbs.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388997755

Steering rack refinished. Waiting on the new bushings from flyin' miata since I accidentally ordered the manual steering rack version.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1388997755

brakes all finished up. Going to wait on the lines until I get everything hooked up and ready to bleed.

Fireindc 01-06-2014 09:33 AM

Wow man, this thing is going to fly back together before you even know it at this rate.

Are you getting some stainless braided brake/clutch lines? You should :)

Fireindc 01-06-2014 09:34 AM

Also, just had a thought. You should implement some extra hidden kill switches under the dash or somewhere super secret, considering how your last miata ended.

I could not imagine having the same thing happen to this one when it is completed. I'd probably lose all will to wrench again after all that effort.

Braineack 01-06-2014 09:40 AM

I can't wait to see this car in about a year when it's finally on the road and you drive it through a muddy pothole.

He's alluded to driving it through winter ... which leaves me wondering "why bother?"

Not that I do not support OCD builds, but rather, I do not support spending time/money on a car which sees salt.

Regardless, this build continues to deliver.

I've thought about that but haven't found a solution that I'd like yet. That was part if the reason I bought the NRG quick release steering wheel hub.

I'm really not that insane when it comes to cleanliness. It just seems that way due to the extent of this build. Protecting the parts is way easier then when they are all in the car. I'd rather give it a good head start. I'm a mountain biker, climber, and used to dirt bike for several years, a little dirt won't send me into frenetic clean mode. Cars are meant to be driven, not put in a garage and stared at.

The car will stay south in St George during the winter. I actually found out that they, unlike Cedar City, don't use salt or even have snow plows. Then again, snow 45 minutes south is pretty rare so I can't blame them.

So yes I will drive it down South, And maybe occasionally north during the winter. The "why bother" mentality is what makes a car rust faster since you ignore the issues.

Saying that I CAN see your point of view, just not too worried about it. I never had plans to go this far, it just has had a domino effect as I progressed.

EErockMiata 01-06-2014 12:50 PM

amazing build and attention to detail. I don't have anything to add but I would recommend painting the non swept area of those brake rotors black. If you don't they will surface rust and seeing how OCD you are about that stuff might as well get r done.

Sweet trail and bike! I love Titus frames.

I ride and Ellsworth Truth that I've managed to whittle down to 23 lbs over the years. It is my scalpel, but after riding a couple of my fathers 29ers, I've been looking at upgrading soon.

Wicked nice bike. For those of you who don't know, that's like the lotus of the MTB world. They are a smaller company that hand builds bikes with a great reputation for excellence. Nice man. My rig is sub 30#, but it's a 5" bike and I put some pretty beefy parts on it for all mountain riding. It's a do it all kind of bike, you can actually convert the Titus from 5" to 4" travel by changing the pivot point of the shock, although due to the terrain I ride I've never done so

I'm a big lanky guy myself and I've been considering going 29", but instead ended up with a large Titus, which is a damn HUGE frame (24.25" tt). Love the way this bike feel now. REALLY interested to ride a 27.5 bike now that they are standard.

If you end up parting out that ellsworth let me know, i'd make you an offer on the frame assuming it's a large. I think i'd really like an epiphiany though

Finally someone who understands Ellsworth. I'm a total fanboy, if I had the coin I'd pick up a 29er carbon Evolve frame and build a 24 lb cross country destroyer.

I still can't get into all mountain bikes. The frame geometry is so strange to me, always feel like I'm on top of the bike rather than "in" the bike(if you catch my drift). There are times I wish I had a tiny bit more than 4" of travel, but if you go fast enough you don't need travel, you just sorta skim across the hard pack to your inevitable doom and resulting AC separation.

I'll let you know on the frame, it is indeed a large and it has had no problem with stress fractures around the seat post cross member like earlier years. I have ridden the shit out of it and it has never failed me once.

Fireindc 01-06-2014 06:40 PM

Sweet man. I rode my buddies giant reign a few times, which is what I'd classify as "all mountain" 6" travel and super raked front end, it's GREAT for bombing hills. Not so much for the climb up, way too squishy when you pedal, even with the pro pedal on. It makes some of my favorite flowy single track feel "boring", because it's SUCH a capable bike.

My 5" Titan is the perfect balance, imho. Love the head angle, around 69* with my fork setup, so probably a touch more lax than your ellsworth, which without looking up i'd guess is around 70-71*. Could be wrong. Anyways, not too laid back, plenty of travel with the rp3 on it, not much pedal bob either. It does it all. I'd ride everything on a 4" bike too though, i aint skurred. :giggle:

Pretty sure my next rig will be a hardtail.

I guess if I rode them more I would't be bothered as much but the aggressive head angle on the Ellsworth makes everything seem sloppy and slow.

My dad has a Giant Anthem with XX1 and if he actually ever got better wheels he'd be around 23 lbs as well. The thing is ridiculous. I can do the same trail 30+ seconds faster than my quickest time on my Truth. 29er's dominate in Southern Utah since you don't fall into the hole/crack/indent, instead you just roll right over everything. Also you carry so much more momentum when it transitions into a climb. I can kill my dad in the downhill/flatland stuff but he always rolls right onto my rear tire when we start a climb since the damn wheels just carry energy so much better.

Sadly I haven't ridden in 9 months. Partially torn Meniscus and cartiledge issues on my patella means I'm taking a long time off to let it heal. Like my car, I CAN'T ride at 7/10's, I just ride like it is a timed event...Strava doesn't help either haha.

I was fighting the urge to go all mtb dude bro on you guys until this post. LoL you can only fight so long. Really sorry to hear about your injury. I injured myself 3 years ago and basically had to take an extended break from biking. I ended up liquidating a lot of my stuff since I knew the technology changes so fast why hang onto it.

I used to do quite a bit of riding on this bike.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1389059088

Very steep AM bike with the 160mm fork on it. Then of course I did this while riding it.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1389059317

Then sold all my bikes (AM bike pictured, dirt jumper, down hill bike etc) and bought my miata.

I just recently built up a Kona Taro frame and modified the hell out of it (only stock thing left on it is the bars/stem). The switch from the 6" travel FS AM bike to a 120mm travel AM 29r Hard tail has been interesting. It has certainly made trails that were mundane and boring on the FS bike nice and fun. I will say that going from a 2x9 to a 1x9 on a 29r makes a serious man out of you. Man... there is no option to drop to granny and grind. You just man up and push through.... sucks at times.

This build is epic and the MTB talk just made it all that much sweeter. Keep working the PT and the daily healing/recovery routine with it. 3 years later and I'm still effed up... price to pay with age I suppose but each day is better and better. You just get better and managing it. :makeout:

This is funny.

Fire's build thread is now about Subarus.

Jeff's build thread is now about mountain bikes.

I guess turbo Miatas are so 2013!

I hate seeing people get injured like that, but we ALL know it's the name of the game ( be it skiing, mtb, whatever else you may be into ). What exactly am I looking at in that x-ray? Is that your back? Care to explain?

Glad to see you back on a bike, I know the reason i avoid the DH resort mtb stuff is because I see it as too risky for me. At least when I go ride AM stuff I earn my turns. So, I typically spend all day climbing and get one good smooth(hopefully) run down. Had lots of buddies break stuff last year though, always a scare. Don't think i'll stop riding anytime soon though :dealwithit:

You have a build thread on here for your miata, EErock? looks like a neat car and i'd love to see more.

Haha, i'm sure Jeff's thread will be right back to miata porn within 24 hours. My thread is going to be subaru infested for at least the next month though. I'll keep the updates sparse :)

I thought there was already a thread for bicycles and orthopedic injuries. I'm here for the incredibly productive combination of single male + insomnia + OCD + work ethic + Miata rebuild.

^this.

But I want to see more on EErock's car. It looks like that unbelivably-perfect-except-no-turbo 10AE that was on here not long ago.

Eerock, if you bought that car... you suck. And you're lucky. And nice job. cuz I WANTED that car. Would buy now if I could.

Jeffbucc 01-07-2014 03:58 PM

Glad there are a lot of fellow mountain bikers on her. Your bike/Miata are really nice EErock!

No updates for now. I'm took yesterday and most likely today off to keep from burning out. I did get 3 big packages in the mail do when I get home from work I'll take some pictures.

What you really should have bought is TSE 11.75" brake kit and not all this junk

That might be next! And nothing I buy is "junk" it all has a purpose!

I'd rather do all this stuff only once and not have to tear the car apart again.

The brakes are easy to do later.

Spray it with aluminum wheel cleaner. Try to keep it out of the guts. Brush it to work it into the crevasses. Hose off. Be sure to let it dry completely.

Be careful of the plastic connectors, some wheel cleaners will attack certain plastics.
