Or you can actually make an effort on this project and replace the OEM OPG with the AEM one.

If you can remove the bezel and glass like the VDO gauges, then it should work fine.

I went with the NJOY Carlife three gauge single din panel and it works fine with 3 AEM across. Wither or not you want to deal with possible shipping issues or other headaches is up to you. My transasction went well and I am very happy with how it turned out.

!NJOY CARLIFE - Radio Gauge Plates Did you order more than a year ago? I tried to order in February 2013, and to the best of my knowledge, not one person has gotten their order since then. Including myself. Retromodern would probably be a better idea for that sort of thing, but i think Jeff is pretty capable of making his own. :) |

Also, if there's enough room in the cluster to actually fit the AEM gauge (I'm talking the guts and needle), I could very likely make a face for it with the artwork and scale shrunk down to fit the smaller opening.
I wonder how much there actually IS to the gauge once you remove it from the housing... |
While I would love to try to make it fit. I'm not sure I want to mess with pulling the innards out of such an expensive gauge. I'm all for OCD and clean and yadda yadda, but I'm not sure I want to risk the damage
I'll just do a 3 across arrangement. The problem with fitting the AEM gauge in the tach is the almost 360 degree sweep pattern of the gauge. The VDO one linked earlier has roughly the same sweep as the stock OPS gauge. I've already fought the issue of having a reliable source of oil pressure indication twice, and I don't intend provoke my shitty luck in wasting additional money on the issue. Anyways, thanks for the ideas and thoughts on solving the problem, I always appreciate it....but I'm honestly ok leaving the stock OPS in the tach and having all the gauges in the tombstone |

I made my own replica DDM works radio surround for my gauges. It's great because the radio mounts to it as well. I laser cut it out of 18 gauge stainless steel and bent it up. PITA to get the bends lined up though.

That's really nice Jeremy. Does Utah have a laser-cutter? LOL.

After you get it laser cut, you can send it out to be zinc plated.

NA Miata Gauge Plates +1 Extremely well made radio surrounds and docking systems. I have one in my car, and I love it. They also make switch plates? http://rabrillhart.smugmug.com/Other...switches-L.jpg http://rabrillhart.smugmug.com/Other...16524815-L.jpg |

Well rather than spend more money I just decided to make an entirely new one. There isn't even a 1/4 mm between then gauges. Really tight fit, which is good I guess, because that means I did it right!
Now I just need to get another guage face from Mr Revlimiter... I put some spacers between the front plate and the rear mounting plate and then used plastic epoxy to attach both of them. Holes really don't need to be perfect I've learned. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1398989334 And some fresh suede https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1398989334 and with the gauges back in. I'll be honest, the 3rd gauge actually made it look better by filling up some of the empty space in the plate. Didn't actually take me very long this time. After you make 4 different revisions you get pretty good at it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1398989334 |
Started it up after putting all the gauges back together and seeing about 60-70 psi on cold idle.
Now I just need to get my AFR voltage calibration right in TS and also mess with switching my VREF & TPS signal wires to see if I can pull closed idle off the insanely high 450+ reading (45% throttle). Baby steps |
Great job, Jeff. Those gauges look perfectly aligned and evenly spaced out!
|
OK so I have been toying with my tps wiring for a while this morning to try to get the closed idle frequency down to 0%(instead of 45%) and I'm getting pretty perturbed.
I've looked at others and what they have done with the vtps wiring and mine mirrors them but the sensor wire is not being grounded when installed on the connector. Testing the tps/ground wires by touching the 2 pins together causes the tps calibration to be perfect(reads 0%) but no combination I have tried can get the same result when actually plugged into the connector. Is there a wiring issue on the ms3x I overlooked when switching to vtps? By that I mean did I neglect to rewire the 5v to 1N? Basically this is all that is holding me back from allowing the engine to idle...that and wildly oscillating AFR gauges in TS and the AEM gauge. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395149181 |
