Made a few changes: Still 1/2" marine birch, coated w thin epoxy then outdoor furniture paint. Extended to 3 15/16" reduced routed thickness at rear mount and shimmed down 1/4" at front mount to lower nose, added 3" NACA brake ducts to try out, end plates just inspire discussion and to torment CFD aero guys.

Hi! Here's my first contribution to this post (please excuse my English if there is faults, I'm French 😅
Dollars spent: around $400 for all listed below.
Hours spent: 15
How effective: will see next weekend's trackday
Materials used: 6mm aluminum for the legs, 2mm for the endplates.
Bracket location: rain guards of the trunk
Tracks tested on: not yet
Race/TT class built for: Trackdays
Dual Elements 66" carbon spoiler on custom aluminum legs end endplates, gurney flap will be add in a few days.
Front airdam and splitter is under construction (full DIY).
Also home made vented/widened front wings that sit on homemade skirt extensions (yes, 80% of the mods are homemade lol)

Been a while thats for sure,
This Aero thread is no doubt one of the best from any platform of cars so im back.. bit of a strange one / pretty frustrating.
Drag racing..... Now when i say no prep i mean Nothing, no rubber no sticky no nothing,
Im RX7 now though not MX5 anymore but similar shape.
I been to the strip and really struggled with traction, spun right the way up to 1000ft.
soo some aero. Im considering one of them agressive duck tail spoilers.. Top speed dosnt matter, that can come later on in time.
whats peoples thoughts on this..

I've read this entire thread a few times over the years. It has been pretty dead as of late, but here's something I'm playing with. I'm running the 9LR street wing, which has the wing mounted pretty far back over the open/turbulent air. It's my understanding that extended the trunk "long tail" style will clean up the air under the wing and help it. I also read that a mild ducktail//spoiler along with a wing is a good thing, hence the mild angle in these pics. I also believe there's something about drag reduction if you pull this off right, but I'm not sure.
Please, aero gods, give me feedback. If this is a waste of time I'll just skip it, but I think it has potential to clean up the look and aero back there. It would be quick release so I could use the trunk.

I am no aero god, but what the hell, here goes ...
I think it is worth experimenting, but whether you will see gains in practice, not so sure. What is your priority - lower drag, or increase DF? DF is easy, just add AoA and/or a second element, but that will add drag as well (in proportion to your wing's L/D ratio). Good for slow tracks with lots of low speed corners, but easily reversed tuned as required, best on high power cars with the grunt to overcome the drag penalty. Getting DF bump with that flap, probably not, at least not like the other two options.
Drag is a different beast, and arises from the low pressure behind the boot. That implies you want to increase the air flowing into the area behind the boot, and that flap looks to me that it will work against that. So rather than that flap, I would remove the boot lid and replace it with a simple ramp sloped from front to rear. For maximum effect, extend it back say to the wing trailing edge, and for added benefit, box it in as a wedge shape (sharp end to the rear) enclosing as much volume as practicable. Ugly as sin, but if it works ...
BTW, are they the regular 9LR mounts on that wing?

I could easily add more downforce with a dual element or a gurney like you said, but that comes with drag and the car is pretty well balanced. In theory this wouldn't increase drag (might decrease?), and add possibly a little downforce? I'm fairly sure it would add downforce if I use it as a spoiler at a mild angle, and maybe even just running it flat.
